Ellenville's Jones headed to Lafayette
Ellenville's Woody Jones thinks he got on the radar of college football coaches during a game against James I. O'Neill.
The coaches came to see some O'Neill players, but watched Jones play and then contacted coach Tony Borriello.
"When a kid is 6-foot-6, 270 (pounds), and runs a 4.9(-second) 40(-yard dash)," Borriello said, "it's going to get people's
attention."
Jones will sign a national letter-of-intent tomorrow, accepting a financial package to play football at Division I-AA Lafayette.
Jones expects to play tackle, the same position where he starred on high school fields last fall.
He said yesterday he will receive a grant for $31,600 of the $41,000 it costs annually to attend the school. Lafayette
does not give athletic scholarships.
Jones, a Sunday Record second-team all-star in 2005, said he received interest from Army, SUNY Albany, SUNY Cortland and
Union.
Lafayette, which competes in the Patriot League, cannot comment on Jones until it receives his written acceptance.
Update: Woody Jones just completed his
first year as a member of the Lafayette junior varsity football team. The Lafayette Leopards are perennial challengers
for the Division 1 - AA national championship. Woody hopes to challenge for a spot on the varsity rooster on 2007!
